Thanks to the patronage of the OmenaArt Foundation, Zachęta presented the largest work ever created in Poland by an African artist: a monumental 200-square-meter installation by Ibrahim Mahama. The piece transformed the historic interiors of Zachęta into a space for reflection on history, material, and collective memory. Entitled Sika Asem (2013–2025), the installation tells the story of Ghana’s history and its shared experience of colonialism and postcolonial transformation. The site-specific work covers the grand staircase with hundreds of jute sacks imported from Ghana, originally used to transport coal, cocoa, and agricultural products.
Through Mahama’s artistic transformation, these materials were given new life and a new voice, telling Polish audiences about the global circulation of goods, labor, and human resilience.
